Traffic Signal Vehicle Detection: Inductive Loops, Video, and Radar
This course prepares technicians to install, calibrate, verify, and maintain vehicle detection technologies commonly deployed at modern signalized intersections. Students investigate the underlying electromagnetic theory of inductive loop detectors, calculating inductance thresholds using $L = \frac{N^2 \mu A}{l}$ and measuring loop resonance, resistance, and quality factor. Instruction progresses through optical video detection setups, zone mapping, virtual detection zone geometry, and microwave radar sensor placement for stop-bar and advance detection. Technicians gain practical experience interfacing detector rack cards, contact closure interfaces, and detector input assemblies with local traffic controllers. Emphasis is placed on systematic troubleshooting of failed lead-ins, moisture intrusion, occlusion issues, environmental interference, and false actuation calls. Through rigorous field simulations and laboratory exercises, students evaluate detector accuracy, response latency, and fail-safe channel operations to ensure safe, efficient intersection control across varied roadway configurations.
